komeko

KOM-EKO S.A. is one of the leading, most dynamic and innovative companies on the Polish waste collection and management market. This is confirmed by the title of “Leader of Polish Ecology” awarded in 2011 in the competition of the Minister of the Environment. The company is also a two-time winner of the National Ecological Competition named “Environment-Friendly Company” under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland in 2011-2012.

[toggle title=”Read more ” on=”0″]

Founded in 1994, the company has been focusing its efforts on ecology and environmental protection since the very beginning. In the early years, the company’s main activities were plumbing and engineering services, as well as reclamation of degraded land, while activities in the area of waste collection were systematically being developed. In order to provide comprehensive support to its customers and in order to satisfy the new legal regulations in environmental protection, KOM-EKO has been actively involved in the development of a comprehensive waste collection and management programme for the City of Lublin since 2002. It simultaneously started building and steadily developing a waste management plant (Zakład Zagospodarowania Odpadów), which received the status of a Regional Municipal Waste Processing Plant in 2013.

Mixed municipal waste undergoes the MBP process (the mechanical and biological processing of waste) at the waste management plant, while packaging waste undergoes the sorting process and green waste is composted. It is worth noting that, the MBP installation, which was put into service in 2012, was the first such comprehensive solution satisfying the environmental protection requirements in southern and eastern Poland.

The total amount of waste processed by KOM-EKO is of the order of 100,000 Mg per year – only 27% of waste is sent to a landfill. The company achieves a high 30% level of recovery of packaging waste. KOM-EKO is also a nationally significant producer of alternative fuel (RDF) from waste. Continuing its strategic cooperation with the Cemex Polska group since 2006, almost 50 k Mg of fuel produced by KOM-EKO is incinerated in cement kilns each year.

In parallel with its processing activities, the company conducts activities in the area of environmental education. As a part of the cooperation with the National Fund for Environmental Protection, the company established the first Education and Demonstration Centre in Poland in 2010, where visitors have the opportunity to learn about the principles of conduct with waste from their manufacture, through their selective collection to their final management. Almost 1000 visitors come to the centre eash year, starting from school children and youths, through students to local authority officials.
