The report of the fourth edition of “Chemical Industry Summit & Awards Gala” on October 12, 2015 in Warsaw

This year’s edition of “Chemical Industry Summit & Awards Gala” was opened with speech on the future of the European chemical industry by Alexis Brouhns. Director General of Solvay Europe spoke about the challenges facing Europe in the context of the growing strength of Asian markets. Conclusions of the speech of Solvay Europe representative set the tone for further debate. The inaugural panel discussion titled “The global chemistry – is solidarity the key to success?” was moderated by Deputy Chairman of PwC Poland – Jacek Socha, who also served as host of “Polish Chemistry Diamonds” Gala. Jacek Socha asked speakers about focecasts for a common industrial policy in the face of changing laws and regulations. Paweł Jarczewski, President of the Board at Grupa Azoty, emphasized the strong position of the company in the fertilizer and gas industry and mentioned measurable results of Polish chemical market liberalization. Michał Sołowow, owner of Synthos, Rovese, Barlinek Komfort; who won Personality of the Year award in this year’s “Polish Chemistry Diamonds” competition, emphasized among other things the need to improve conditions of coal mining. Robert Stankiewicz – CEO of DOW Poland and Baltic countries expressed positive attitude towards TTIP agreement on behalf of his company. Piotr M. Szelenbaum (law firm White & Case) commented on the impact of environmental regulations and tariffs in the USA, Asia and Europe on equal opportunities for competition. Karl Foerster, Executive Director of PlasticsEurope, argued that the economy is not only all about using all the resources, but also ensuring their optimal use through the use of recycling

Another panel of the conference was devoted to the situation of Polish industry in the face of European challenges. The discussion was moderated by Marcin Jędrzejewski – Director at the Warsaw office of The Boston Consulting Group. Speakers debated on raising capital for new investments in the chemical industry and the integration of the Polish chemical market and its impact on the growing importance of Polish chemistry in Europe. Discussion about raising capital for innovation took on color thanks to active exchange of views imposed by two banking sector representatives – Michał Dymicki (BGK) and Artur Kucia (PKO BP S.A.).

The final panel titled „Innovation as a source of competitiveness of the European chemistry industry” was preceded by a speech of An Nuyttens – President of Silica Global Business Unit, Solvay, who spoke about climate challenges facing European chemistry. The moderator of the third panel debate of “Chemical Industry Summit & Awards Gala” was Adam Leszkiewicz, President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty of Zaklady Azotowe Kedzierzyn SA, who asked participants about the importance of innovation and motivation for its implementation.
Grzegorz Czul, CEO of FLUOR SA, stated that the main inspiration for the implementation of innovations is the desire to maintain the acquired company’s position and responsibility for its fate. He also added that he takes into consideration ideas of even serial employees and is willing to take the chances. Marek Jagieła from BASF Poland spoke about innovation as a necessary condition for maintaining competitive advantage, and Patrycja Zielinska, Vice President of the Industrial Development Agency (ARP S.A.) announced a significant investments in innovation. Michał Grochowski put the thesis that for ERBUD Industry it is the customer who verify innovations and Michal Bieniek, President of Apeiron Synthesis, argued that passion is the basis for innovation and striving for positive change.
